Below you will find more general guidance followed by specific instructions for recording in your classroom from the classroom podium or your laptop, or from an iPhone, Android phone and iPad.
Overall Considerations
Consider the locations of your Podium/laptop in relationship to the students’ seating.
Check whether or not the Podium PC has a microphone. You can test this using the Zoom app.
Zoom presents different options for sharing and capturing audio and video from the camera as well as sharing a screen, please make sure to keep on the ones that you would like to record and turn off the ones not in use.
General Guidelines for Recording Using the Zoom mobile app
If you use a mobile phone to record, you can connect to The New School WiFi
If you use a mobile phone to record, place it in the middle of the table and consider using a portable mic. See recommendations below.
Make sure your phone is fully charged
Turn off notifications and put your phone on the Do Not Disturb Mode
If you hold or move with your phone around the classroom make sure to not block the mic.
If you decide to use a portable mc with your phone, make a test recording
In Zoom, record to the Cloud
If students are listening on the Zoom synchronously, when recording with your mobile phone in the classroom, arrange for students to submit questions via Google Docs or Canvas, and not the Zoom chat. Unless someone is following the Zoom chat on a separate device.
Repeat the questions from students for clarity and to make sure the recordings capture it
Facilitate the discussion in an effort to avoid multiple people speaking at the same time which will impact the quality of the recording.
If you decide to log in to multiple devices simultaneously please make to have one on mute with audio on off to avoid microphone disruption
If multiple students long in to Zoom in the same location (classroom) only one device (the one that is used for recording) in the room should have the audio on. Please advise all to mute their audio and turn off the volume on their speakers.
If you plan to record using a mobile device or the goal for your recording is to capture audio only please make sure to turn off the video in your Zoom meeting.
