Guide To Teaching and Learning

National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD)

The New School is now an institutional member of the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD), a leading provider of professional development in higher education. They are dedicated to supporting faculty members, postdocs and graduate students in making successful transitions throughout their careers. They provide professional development and mentoring through a host of resources that are applicable across all fields, disciplines and practices.

You don’t need to be a faculty member to benefit from NCFDD resources. Each of our employees has access to create an account (instructions below).

Available Resources and Supported Disciplines

NCFDD was founded to support faculty in traditional liberal arts and sciences but has expanded to include institutions with faculty from a variety of profiles and practices. As you peruse their virtual offerings, you will still notice many offerings framed to support those disciplines that foreground academic scholarship (there’s a lot about “writing”) but the resources and guidance are applicable across a variety of professional practices.

Part-Time Faculty

The New School is particularly pleased to be able to offer this resource to our Part-Time Faculty. The emphasis is on your professional development rather than just teaching and learning and we hope you will take advantage of their many offerings, though in some cases, depending on your professional practice, you will need to “translate” their resources and recommendations to your own work. When activating your individual membership, please select “adjunct” even though we do not designate our part-time faculty with that term.

Benefits of Individual Membership

Our institutional membership means that all faculty, graduate students and staff have access to NCFDD resources. The benefits of activating your individual membership, and engaging with the available resources, can include greater success with getting published, securing grants, increased confidence as a scholar, researcher, designer or artist, increased confidence as “an academic,” and even healthier relationships with colleagues. Membership includes access to:

  • The Monday Motivator (weekly email including productivity tips)
  • Monthly core curriculum, guest expert webinars, and multi-week courses
  • The Career Center resources
  • Audio and video recordings, slides and transcripts from all webinars
  • Moderated monthly writing challenges and monthly mentor matches
  • Discounted Faculty Success Program registration [may want to delete this]
  • Online accountability and tracking software to alumni of the Faculty Success Program
  • Private discussion forum for peer-mentoring and problem solving
