Libraries and working with research librarians
The University Library provides essential services for faculty including reserves, in-class research instruction, and purchases of recommended material. Go to the YouTube playlist for an introduction to the Libraries and Archives and to learn how to use BobCat, the library catalog. Faculty can schedule a one-on-one consultation to learn about the Libraries and Archives. A library orientation is given to all Parsons first-year Bachelor’s students as part of the core curriculum.
Stress to your students that librarians are there to help them and really enjoy doing so. The information below may help encourage them.
For students
The one thing we all need to know? According to Albert Einstein, it’s “the location of the library.” The New School has three physical locations plus an archives and special collections reading room,, access to nearby libraries and tons of online materials. Librarians are available to answer questions and help you find what you need for your assignments and research.
- Learn how the Library works. These videos explain how to locate books on course reserve, request interlibrary loans and search the database effectively.
- Explore the offerings. The library offers private study and small-group spaces, scanning and printing, research guides and more.
- Work with a Subject Librarian. Research is not a linear process and talking it through helps. Subject Librarians have deep expertise and can help you save time and strategize, think outside the box and find resources you might not have come across otherwise.
- Librarians love to work with students. They are available for one-on-one consultations in-person or online. Reach out for support on getting started, searching for materials and evaluating sources. They also respond to inquiries via chat, texts at 646.480.6309 and email at libhelp@newschool.edu. Really, they love to work with students. You are not bothering them if you ask for help. In fact, if you do not ask for help, you are preventing them from doing their jobs!
