Guide To Teaching and Learning

Academic Advising and Career Development

At The New School, Academic Advising and Career Development work together hand in hand to guide students as they explore a better understanding of professional development and career opportunities.

Our approach is grounded in the understanding that human beings are complex, dynamic individuals with interconnected experiences. We speak to the whole person addressing what happens inside and outside of the classroom that impacts their success.

We define the “classroom” experience as what students learn from their field of study and how they apply the practice of study through internships and employment opportunities. These two ideas are mutually joined in a concerted effort to ensure that study, theory and practice are coming full circle to create opportunities for learning, growing and developing.

As Academic Advisors, we engage students in conversations to help support greater curricular understanding and opportunities, all the while supporting them as they design their individual academic and career pathways.

In addition to the Academic Advisors, our Career Development team works closely to provide in-depth and robust programming including alumni panels, career fairs, skills workshops, and more. Together, we create an innovative experience that is meaningful and transformative for students.
