Bias Awareness in Faculty Peer Review
Overview
All humans have biases, implicit and explicit, and they are nearly impossible to eradicate, so we need to become conscious of those biases – in ourselves and in others – in order not to let them affect our individual and collective thinking, judgments and actions. Most people would not intentionally allow bias to impact their judgments, but bias is ubiquitous and can be so subtle that we don’t see it at work. It’s human nature, and we need to acknowledge that, consider our own thoughts and actions, and learn to be alert to its possibilities and to address it when we think we see it.
Review the links below for further information on understanding how bias can manifest and, more importantly, on steps to take to try to prevent implicit bias from affecting words and actions in peer review. (Links open in a new tab so you can easily return here to continue.)
